Bazi means 'eight characters' and is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny. Its chart uses four pairs of symbols derived from a birth date and time.
1 Build the eight characters
Your chart is built from four pillars: the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Each pillar has two parts stacked on top of each other, a Heavenly Stem above and an Earthly Branch below. Four pillars times two parts gives you eight characters. That is the whole name.
Each stem and branch has traditional Five Element associations. The twelve Earthly Branches also correspond to the zodiac animals. A calculator creates the chart; this guide helps you understand its labels.
If your birth time is uncertain: flag the hour pillar and any interpretation that depends on it. A rough time may fall on either side of a calculation boundary.
2 Find your Day Master
The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is called the Day Master. In Bazi interpretation, the other chart elements are read in relation to it.
The Day Master combines an element with yin or yang. Traditional descriptions use images such as a tree for yang wood or a candle for yin fire. These are interpretive metaphors, not fixed descriptions of your character.
3 Read your Five Elements balance
The Five Elements have two traditional relationship cycles. Use this table to follow the terminology in a reading.

A reading considers how the chart supports or restrains the Day Master. Terms such as 'strong' and 'weak' describe this framework; they do not measure your confidence, resilience or worth.
Counting elements can help you notice the chart's layout, but a count alone is not a complete reading. Ask how the interpretation accounts for the season and relationships between the symbols.
4 Meet the Ten Gods
The Ten Gods describe relationships between other stems and the Day Master. Their names are technical labels within Bazi, rather than literal people or deities in your life.
- Elements that support your Day Master relate to help, learning and protection.
- Elements the same as your Day Master relate to peers, siblings and your own drive.
- Elements your Day Master produces relate to expression, creativity and output.
- Elements your Day Master controls relate to wealth, resources and what you manage.
- Elements that control your Day Master relate to discipline, authority, pressure and structure.
These five broad groups are a useful introduction. Their yin and yang relationships produce the ten labels. Treat any life interpretation as a question to explore, rather than a conclusion drawn from a label alone.
5 Add time: your Luck Pillars
Luck Pillars add roughly ten-year periods to the interpretation. They introduce another pair of symbols to compare with the birth chart. The name does not mean a decade must be lucky or unlucky.
Read the labels without turning them into judgments
A missing element is not a personal defect. A 'weak' Day Master does not mean you are a weak person, and a clash does not establish that something bad will happen.
Use the chart as a reflection framework. Keep what helps you ask a useful question, compare it with your experience and leave room for explanations outside the chart.

A balanced chart is not automatically a lucky one, and a chart with a gap is not a flawed one. Balance in Bazi is about how the whole picture works together, not about having a little of everything.
